How to start Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

January 14, 2021 By Irene

In this post, I give some background information on how to start Affiliate Marketing.  Affiliate marketing is where you promote and sell a product for a company or owner of the product for a share of the revenue generated.  Sometimes you may have an interest in the product because you

  •  have used it, and seen its value;
  •  can also sell goods you have not used;
  •  can also produce the product and market it as a creator and marketer. Or have others promote the product for you too.

Parties involved in Affiliate Marketing

There are several parties involved in affiliate marketing, namely;

The Merchant – the one that creates the product – can be a large company like Adidas; or an individual owning a small business.

The Network –  is the intermediary that puts together all the products and handles the affiliates and payments, like Amazon. Product owners make the product, link up with networks who then acts act as an intermediary between them, and the affiliate. (sellers)   Affiliates can have access to several products from one network.

Affiliates are also known as Publishers by some sites.

The Customer –  is the buyer.

How does Affiliate Marketing  Work?

Affiliate Marketing works with the Network giving affiliates a unique link to merge with product images on their websites and other channels.  This way, the product is advertised for visitors to see.

Affiliates are expected to make known to the consumers their participation as an affiliate for a product.  This is where disclosure is revealed. A tracking system works in the background to effect delivery and payment.

Steps to Join an Affiliate Company and Succeed as an Affiliate

  • You need to look at reviews about the affiliate company you want to use.  Then register with them. They track the links to know what items were purchased or even viewed.
  • Make reviews of products, the right way, to enable you to make sales easily.
  • Find a medium or think through how to get your links to your chosen audience.  It could be through a blog/website or through video on a YouTube channel, to name a few.
  • Create the content and reviews about the products.
  • Go through questions people are asking on your niche (interest or product) and use keyword research to
  • Start writing answers on them through posts on your blog.
  • Get free products from producers or purchase some for the purpose.

In writing a product review, you establish trust with the customer.   A product review template enables the consistent and quick generation of reviews.

Niche affiliate marketing

With niche affiliate marketing, you can have what is known as a niche affiliate blog.   Focus is on one product or a set of products in a related category that are reviewed in blog posts.  You can replicate this method for an offline side hustle;  your creativity comes in a great deal here.  This can also be termed as building your brand.  The products you offer can be so focussed that it helps to find your site.  We can relate to this, as there are particular sites we choose to visit only because of what is offered and the way it is done.   We get our problems solved by visiting certain websites.  In the same way, setting up a niche site should solve problems for others.

Best affiliate Marketing Programmes

You can be an affiliate for anything from

  • Courses,
  • Hosting,
  • WordPress themes,
  • eBooks (downloadable products),
  • Physical products,
  • Software.

Affiliate marketing opportunities abound online, the most popular one being Amazon.   To find them, make a search in Google for say children’s’ toys (niche) + affiliate programme.   This is a very focused niche, as it is only one item related to children that have been chosen.  You can also search, based on something you’ve’ used and would like to write reviews about it for the benefit of others.

Affiliate marketing average income – depends on the company, product, and type of affiliate programme being used.  One product when promoted well can generate a lot of income.

How to create an affiliate website

Anything you have learnt about creating a website can be applied to an affiliate website.  You may just have to look round to see how others have done it for you to decide.  It may also lead you to your choice of a website theme.  Some WordPress themes are set up for product images or shops.

Benefits of Affiliate Marketing

The ease of entry into Affiliate Marketing is one benefit most people like about it.  You may have to set up a website with some content on it before some networks will allow you to be a publisher.

Affiliate marketing is considered passive income.  Once the process is set up properly, it generates earnings on its own.  This kind of online marketing requires some knowledge and training.  Like any online business, it is necessary to attract visitors to the site through SEO using keywords.  Also, study other sites to learn their strategies.  Most people fail because they give up too early and don’t take the time to put in their best efforts.

Wealthy Affiliate teaches affiliate marketing in four steps providing the necessary tools to help you succeed.  The steps are to

  • Find a niche;
  • Set up a website. Find a product.

How to search for a Domain Name

June 4, 2020 By Irene

Search for a Domain Name
Search for a Domain Name

The first thing to do when starting a blog is to search for a domain name.  Start by brainstorming and looking at other domain names and what is on those websites for ideas on what you will want yours to be like.

Types of Domain Name

Domain names are of various types, e.g. brand-related, keyword-based; or both keyword and brand-related.  Ask yourself whether you want your domain name to be related to your business or interest. This helps you to know the type to choose.   What the blog is about could be implied from the name chosen e.g. home supplies.  This then becomes the keyword.

The text or content of the blog shows what it is about so adding the keyword to the url is no longer compulsory or necessary, but you can make it so if that is your preference.

When you craft one, go to the following sites, and find its availability.  In the past, some of the sites only gave the domain name meaning they were domain name generators.

Currently, all such sites offer web hosting, and website builder (using wordpress).  We are thinking of using wordpress.com or wordpress.org for our starter sites, so register your domain and hosting with them and get your website theme from them.   You could also opt for the Wealthy Affiliate premium membership route with its added benefits.

Criteria for finding a Domain Name

  • It should not be too long
  • Should be memorable
  • Easy to pronounce

Domain Name Generators

On the other hand, you can also check the following domain name generators for more information on the types of domain names and extensions available:

  • Domain.com
  • Godaddy.com
  • Name.com
  • Wealthyaffiliate.com
  • Bluehost.com
  • WordPress.com
  • WordPress.org

Other domain extensions and add-on

A .com or .net domain are the popular ones.  For most of these tools, the results generated are related to the words you typed in.  Several domain name variations will then come up.

More options from other domain extensions like .info, .biz, .site etc, will be provided.  In addition to your offer will be the privacy and protection of your details by the company.

What is the cost of a Domain Name?

The cost of a domain differs from one site to the other; and also from type to type e.g. a .com maybe be higher than others like .net or .org, .info, .biz, .me; depending on the site you buy it from.

But overall, domain names are usually not expensive and cost between $10-$15 a year.  It is usually bought for 1-3 years at a go.   The privacy and protection that is provided by the company are added. When you buy a domain, it is saved and protected on a database; which is known as WHOIS privacy and protection.

The cost of domain and hosting at Bluehost is comparable to the others.  You may purchase a WordPress theme from

wordpress.org or wordpress.com and host it at Bluehost.  Alternatively, you could sign up as a premium member with Wealthy Affiliate, get access to their domain and hosting, plus all the added benefits of being in the community.

Note that you can move your website from one hosting site to another.

The exercise of searching for a domain name may take some days to do.  Combine it with brainstorming and writing out some of the articles you have in mind to put on your blog.

Did you find this post helpful?  If so, please leave a comment and share it.  Thank you.

How to find Blog Niche Ideas in 2024

April 1, 2020 By Irene Leave a Comment

Finding Blog Niche Ideas, 2024

Find Blog Niche Ideas for 2020
Find Blog Niche Ideas for 2020

Searching for a blog niche idea is one of the first skills to develop or acquire for continuous use in a blog and other posts.  A niche market is the subset (sub niche) of the broad market to which a specific product, services, or interests relates,  and which appeals to a small, specialized section of the population.

For example, cooking is a broad niche category. A subset of this niche will be cooking for kids, the aged and also cooking tips.  A niche site may also be related to a particular geographic area or group of people, industry or age group.

Choosing a niche also relates to a target audience that influences the topics to cover, as well as how to present and promote it.  The type of niche chosen can help get traffic to a site.

In addition, a niche is also anything people would do because it makes them happy or alleviates suffering and so they would like to pay for information on it e.g health-related issues like health supplements, healthy foods, etc.

The most profitable niches fall under these five areas:

  • Health and fitness
  • Wealth/money
  • Relationships and dating
  • Self-improvement
  • Hobbies and interests

The first three are said to be evergreen – which means they are needed all year round.

Blog niche list

The under-mentioned blog niche lists, some of which overlap, have been stated in their broad categories:

  • arts and entertainment
  • business and investing
  • computers and internet
  • e-business and e-marketing
  • education
  • employment and jobs
  • fiction
  • food, wines, cooking
  • games
  • green products

More niche categories are

  • health and fitness
  • home and garden
  • language
  • mobile
  • parenting and families
  • politics/current affairs
  • references
  • self-help
  • software and services
  • religion
  • sports
  • travel

How to search for a sub-niche

  1. Pick a niche idea you know something about (not necessarily be an expert) from the above categories; and
  2. Search for its keywords

Inside Google,

  1. Search for dictionary.com.  Look for ‘synonyms’ and type in niche keyword. After getting the synonyms of the keyword, choose three and type them into Google one after the other for more keyword variations

1.1.  type niche keyword + best blog/post/article.  From the results page go to the revealed websites and find keywords you can use

1.2  check and use the real-time related searches at the bottom of the search results page (SERPs)

1.3   use Google’s keyword planner for more variations of the chosen keyword;

1.4  Examine Google suggest options after typing in a keyword.

Suggested resources

Step to SEO Success

In Amazon.com,

2.0  Check e-books section (kindle) for titles in the chosen niche.  Go through the contents of the books  and also the best-seller list;

2.1  Go through Amazon product listings and product reviews for more ideas.

In Wikipedia.org

3.0  Type your niche phrase into the search bar.  Check the hyperlinked words in blue from the article, the table of contents and other menus items listed on the left side of the page for more keywords.

Check the following tools, namely

4.0  Ubbersuggest – for keyword variations listed alphabetically

5.0  Answer the public – uses questions, prepositions, comparisons etc. to find questions being asked by people in real-time.  Put the questions etc into Google for websites where those search terms can be found.

6.0  Wealthy affiliate free keyword tool from which you can also get search volume and competition for chosen keywords;

7.0  Word tracker – gives 40 of the best keywords every single day in batches of 10

Save your list of keywords in a spreadsheet and bookmark relevant sites in your browser for future reference.

These are by no means an exhaustive list of available keyword research tools.  There are several paid tools that also show much-needed metrics and insight about a keyword or phrase.  It is necessary to know the average number of searches in a month and also see how other websites have used the phrase.

You may search Yahoo, Bing, and YouTube for the same terms. In fact some of the tools like keywordtool.io, a Google alternative show results from all three.  Also, look for popular groups on the niche from social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Also, look for adverts and products in the niche.  This shows that it is profitable.  A niche idea can be used in a number of creative ways both online and offline.  You don’t have to use all the tools however,  just play around with some and choose the one that suits you.

You can then create blog posts with the keywords found adding elements not found in the other posts examined to make yours different by adding other perspectives, images, or making it more engaging, etc.

What are the niche keywords needed for?

Niche keywords are needed for

  • crafting out a niche-specific url or domain name [e.g boilingrecipes.com]; or
  • finding various niche menu items;
  • creating titles /heading for blog topic;
  • use with other related phrases in an article or post

You can also use a blog topic ideas generator like Hubspot’s and others for more inspiration on your blog title while maintaining the keywords.

Other guidelines for using niche keywords include the following

  • Keywords and phrases are to be used sparingly in a post while writing for the audience, not the search engines.  In fact, an article full of keywords is not recognised by the search engines.    Keywords used creatively in 3-5 places of a post and also in anchor texts of the post is however acceptable.
  • Also, have in mind how you’ll like to present your posts.  Will it be in the form of checklists or resources, how-to guides, expert roundup, tutorials, pieces of opinion, quotes, etc.  If you are interested in lists, if you find a post entitles ‘7 best health blogs’ make yours longer by adding three more points, hence ’10 best health blogs’.
  • Also, look for influential people in the niche and follow them.
  • Use other people’s infographics or videos and link back to them or give to the attribution to the original producer.

The ‘about’ and ‘privacy policy’ pages of your blog must be in place.  If it’s a social media site, the description or profile page must include and reflect the niche chosen.  Remember to use your selected keywords to create titles, content and also subheadings and categories for your blog and social media posts.

These are the guidelines for finding a blog niche idea.

Do let us know what you think of it in the comments section and please share.
